Follow these steps on your Windows PC. Menu names may vary slightly by version.
What you'll need
Open Tailscale on your Windows PC.
If a web page opens asking you to Sign in with Google/Microsoft/GitHub, do not sign in. Close the browser tab — we use an auth key, not SSO.
The Tailscale app will ask you to Join your network and offer Sign in to your network. This will open the browser SSO page. Dismiss that window.
Open Command Prompt on your PC. Typing cmd on the Start menu search usually brings up the command prompt.
Use the following command, replacing <tailscale-auth-key> with your own Tailscale authorization key which should look something like this tskey-auth-XXXX-XXXX:
tailscale login --auth-key <tailscale-auth-key>
After a few seconds, Tailscale should register your device to the tailnet.
Because Tailnet lock is enabled, your device must be approved before it can talk to other devices or services.
⏳ While awaiting approval: The hub services won't open until the admin approves your device.
🌐 Tip: Exit Nodes
By default, Tailscale only provides private access to the hub. If you enable Use exit node, all of your internet traffic goes out through the chosen node (similar to commercial VPNs). This is useful if you are on untrusted networks (eg. WiFi at airports or cafes). We provide exit nodes you can select after you're connected. For more details, check the VPN section in the available services.
